Gene Therapy Appeal

You may have seen the recent media coverage on the
CF gene therapy research programme. The Cystic Fibrosis Trust urgently needs £6million to ensure that the world-leading research into gene therapy for Cystic Fibrosis, carried out by the UK CF Gene Therapy Consortium, can proceed to a clinical trial.Without the required funding this trial will not happen, taking away the hope of a potentially life-lengthening treatment for people with Cystic Fibrosis.

Thank you for all you have done already to support our £30million investment in the gene therapy research.  So far, the Consortium has developed and refined a gene therapy product, carried out successful safety tests, and found encouraging effects in many patients. Over 100 people with CF are being recruited to take part in the multi-dose trial due to start in early 2012.

However we do not have sufficient resources to fund the trial. So, we have started a major campaign to raise the £6million needed for the trial. Without the funds, we won’t know the real potential of this very promising product.

Most of the money invested in the research so far has been raised by families, friends and existing supporters of people living with Cystic Fibrosis & people like you. We greatly appreciate all the support that you have given.

We are now reaching out to our network of friends and donors worldwide, we are in talks with pharmaceutical companies, we have applied for grants and are trying to attract new gifts. We are also asking everyone in the CF community and beyond to consider what they can do to help raise the funds required.

I am also asking you now to make a special donation to help make this trial possible.

And there are other ways you can support this appeal:

Organise a fundraising event (please contact your local RFM
Take part in an existing fundraising event
Forward this as an email on to your friends, family and contacts.

This programme has come a long way and is now at a critical stage. Without the clinical trial, we will never know whether gene therapy could be a viable treatment for Cystic Fibrosis.

If you would like to be kept informed about how this campaign is going, please click here and register.

Please do consider supporting this appeal today and if you are able to make a donation, please give as generously as you can to help ensure that the research can progress to this next, crucial stage.
