A brief biography:
Dorian Spencer Davies
was born in Carmarthen and spent his early years in the small west Wales
village of Angle.
'I think growing up
in this idyllic, unspoilt relatively remote coastal village may have had
a larger influence on my work than I realised. I remember vividly the various
boats in Haven and being fascinated with everything to do with the
sea.'
Having also lived in
Tenby had a significant influence on his work. Dorian attended Dyfed College
of Art in 1997 - 03 studying Natural History Illustration. He published
his first book soon after, entitled, "The Heart of Wales Line - an
illustrated journey," of the railway trip between Swansea and Shrewsbury.
During the 80s/90s
Dorian embarked upon a career working with several London book publishers,
eventually working with Dorling Kindersley as Senior Art Editor for their
Children's book division. In all, Dorian designed and produced over
40 books for DK including the highly successful and world famous
incredible cross section books.
During the late 90s
Dorian returned to Wales and began illustrating and painting from New Quay.
The painting side of his work started to develop with the influence of
the sea again backin his blood. He ilived for a while in St Dogmaels and
now lives in Tenby, and is greatly inspired by the Pembrokeshire
and Ceredigion coastline.
'I am currently fascinated
by the light and atmosphere of the little harbours around North Pembrokeshire
and the little fishing boats that sit snugly in them. In fact boats are
increasingly becoming more a part of my work and I love the character
and personalities of these little fishing boats. I think the unique
and beautiful coastline of Pembrokeshire and Cardigan Bay will have a major
influence on my work for many years to come.'
